Snakes as Household Pets
For some people, having a “normal” pet like a cat or dog is just not the right thing for them. For some individuals, having an exotic pet such as a snake can be a rewarding experience. There are some details about snakes, however, of which you should be aware.
Snakes can be quite interesting pets and, with the correct supervision, can be great household pets. The first thing that you should always understand is that your snake needs to be in a secure environment. This also means that your snake should not be able to escape no matter what you keep it in.
For those who have not had snakes before, the recommended breeds are king snakes, corn snakes, and ball pythons. These breeds of snakes have proved to be the most gentle breeds whose needs can most easily be met. These snakes are a few of the smaller breeds of snakes, because the bigger breeds tend to require a more involved care process. Speaking with your local snake vendor before buying might be a good option to help you choose a low-maintenance snake as a starter pet.
The next thing you should consider is the food or prey that you choose to feed your snake. When you buy mice for the snakes, make sure they are pre-killed. If you put a live rat or mouse into the cage and the snake isn’t hungry, the snake might be the one that ends up injured instead of the mouse. Small rodents do have the ability to inflict some sort of abrasion if you are not careful.
