Foods Pets Should Avoid, but Won't

If you have pet's, you know how much like children they can be. In fact, pet owners who also have children are sometimes unable to determine who the culprit is behind some messes, such as liquids spilled on the kitchen floor. Did the cat knock that cup off the table or did Jimmy do it? A pet-owner-slash-parent may never know for sure, but they still have to clean it up. And while our medicine bottles are child-proof, they're not always pet-proof, and it's our responsibility as adults to take the extra step to keep our pets safe.

Medicines should never be taken by anyone that they aren't prescribed to. However, if left out, kids and pets are likely to consume them like candy because they simply don't know any better. We all take special precautions to be sure our kids don't down our bottles of pills, but we don't always think about what our pets are capable of. The truth is that while Fido seems really smart as he snatches that Frisbee out of the air, he doesn't have any more or a clue about life than your toddlers. To keep him safe, you have to be sure things like medicine are put safely away. While your kids can't get the top off with their hands, pets just might gnaw right through the bottle.

Chocolate is another product that should be kept away from pets, especially dogs. Dogs don't have the enzymes that humans have, that break down and digest chocolate. When given enough chocolate, pets can die. That Kit Kat isn't harmless, so put it away. If left out on the counter, you're likely to come back to find the wrapper open, your snack completely gone (licked clean), and possibly a sick pet, or worse.
